Happy Game doesn’t overstay its welcome, with its levels balanced in pace and originality with a brisk, well told, disturbing story. I felt uncomfortable when pulling on the legs of creepy dolls or witnessing my little buddy getting swallowed whole by a giant bunny monster, but it’s so well put together that I couldn’t help but enjoy it. Coupled with some excellent animations that at times made it feel like an interactive cartoon, and plenty of equally creepy sound effects and music, Happy Game does exactly what it intends as it freaks you out in all the best ways. Still, Happy Game is a psychological horror experience at its core, and in that it succeeds. I won’t spoil it, but as a long time Liverpool FC supporter I got a kick out of it… pun intended. It would have been so easy to double down on the horror aspects at play, but there were a handful of moments where I laughed aloud at the clever animations, and a particular moment during the second nightmare had me grinning ear to ear. But there’s plenty of humour sprinkled throughout the adventure too. Happy Game revels in its devilish character designs and mean-spirited monsters that are out to tease and make life difficult for our hero (of sorts), not holding back on sudden shocks or flash imagery of blood and guts. It’s got a hell of a story too, and not just because of its imagery. This is a game that prefers to have you follow through its story at a decent pace instead of throwing up roadblocks just for the sake of padding out the runtime. It falls shy of being too difficult as to become frustrating, but some puzzles will require some consultation with the old grey matter. You don’t die, per se, but you will come across moments where it takes a little more ingenuity to continue. Though relatively short, this combination of interaction and general movement works well, with a small amount of awkwardness when the puzzles become more elaborate later in the game. You’ll be pulling, lifting and interacting with everything you come across in order to guide the nameless boy through each nightmare scenario, initially to chase down his lost football, then later other objects that bring a smile to his face in this horrifying dreamscape. But there’s one distinct difference, as the game allows you to interact with its eerie cast of characters more like a point-and-click adventure than a traditional platformer, not unlike Amanita’s previous work ( Machinarium and Botanicula, among others). Happy Game follows a similar formula to some more famous cousins, namely Little Nightmares and Inside, as you guide your little hero through dark and sometimes terrifying scenes along a small handful of side-scrolling levels. Despite a little awkwardness along the way, it succeeds in its attempts rather well. Look at him! He’s so happy! Which is exactly what Happy Game does best, presenting the absurd nightmares of a child who chases after his favourite things to find happiness across jarring, dark and deadly imagery. Sure, it’s clearly not a ‘happy’ game given the obviously weird and violent looking designs, but just look at the little boy’s smile. Truly uncomfortable stuff, but if you’re one for something a little horrifying, you can wishlist the game on Steam now.I’ll be honest, when I was first shown Happy Game, the latest from Czech Republic studio Amanita Design, I wasn’t sure what to think. Happy Game is bringing ‘something’ to the table, and whatever that ‘something’ is, it’s certainly effective.įor as much as you might see impaled characters in the darker world of Happy Game, the most nightmarish stuff comes when you see the decapitated bodies and smiley faces becoming stuck on your head in the light world. Things really get dark later in the trailer when things in the ‘happy’ world seem to become even more sinister than when it is being overtly dark. It’s a striking dichotomy and one that creates a fascinating visual whiplash. As you traverse these worlds, which appear to be on an endless moving wheel, the game will flick from a joyful atmosphere to one that looks like David Lynch decided that he was work wasn't weird enough already.

No matter your reason for buying one, you’ll get a pretty snappy and modern iOS device for your money. And unlike the latest iPhones, the iPod Touch still gets you a free pair of EarPods in the box - and even includes a headphone jack! You’ll also have the freedom to enjoy some tunes on the go while taking a break from your phone, which is something we can all use a bit of these days. Smartphones fill up fast with apps, photos and messages, so serious listeners who prefer to download rather than stream could get a lot out of a dedicated music player - especially if you’re loading up on space-eating, high-resolution audio files. You’ll no longer have an excuse to be left out of group chats or FaceTime calls.įinally, Apple’s newest iPod may hold some appeal for old-school or minimalist users who truly want a device just for playing music. The iPod Touch also makes for a good secondary device for Android users who want to enjoy some of iOS’ exclusive apps, games and features without having to switch to an entirely different phone. This could also help prepare the youngsters in your life for their first handset - the iPod Touch was my first iOS device back in 2008 or so, and by the time I got an iPhone a few years later, I was able to hit the ground running. And thanks to Apple’s robust iOS parental controls, you can set screen time limits and app restrictions to make sure your little one isn’t in front of a screen all day or accessing any inappropriate content. It has access to the trove of apps and games on Apple’s App Store, meaning kids can play Roblox, watch their favorite YouTube videos or jam out to Disney soundtracks without having to constantly borrow an adult’s phone. Considering virtually everyone uses their smartphone as a music player, what’s the point of buying an iPod these days? For starters, the $199 iPod Touch makes for a great first iOS device for younger users who don’t need a full-on phone just yet - especially considering it’s more than half the price of even the cheapest iPhone. It also reached number 6 on Billboard Japan 's Top Singles chart, which is based only on physical sales, and topped Billboard Japan 's Hot Animation chart, which tracks anime and video game music. The song debuted at number 5 on Billboard Japan 's Hot 100. 4 on the Oricon Singles Chart and charted for 19 weeks. In 2019, the song won Top Japanese Gold Song at the 30th International Pop Poll Awards in Hong Kong. Michelle Minikhiem of J-Generation called "Red Swan" "grand in the way only songs written by Yoshiki can be," with a vocal performance that "absolutely aches with longing." She described the track and its "swelling percussion, passionately romantic lyrics, and murmured philosophical questioning about life" as telling the story of a bittersweet love. The television edit of the song was published on digital platforms on July 23, 2018, while the full song was released digitally and on CD, in two different versions, on October 3, 2018. Two days later, Yoshiki and Hyde performed the song live on Music Station. On September 15, Yoshiki revealed that "Red Swan" was actually completed just days earlier in Los Angeles. Its standard edition cover art was designed with elements from the cover art of "Rusty Nail", namely the blood dripping from a woman's mouth. "Red Swan" was inspired by a section of X Japan's 1994 number-one single " Rusty Nail". However, later that month the song was announced to now be credited to "Yoshiki feat. "Red Swan" was originally announced as an X Japan song, that would only feature Yoshiki and Sugizo, with Hyde on vocals. On July 8, 2018, it was revealed at Anime Expo in Los Angeles that X Japan had teamed up with Hyde from L'Arc-en-Ciel to create the theme song of the third season of the Attack on Titan anime. In 2019, the song won Top Japanese Gold Song at the 30th International Pop Poll Awards. It also topped the iTunes Rock Chart in 10 countries, making it the best-performing anime song in the chart's history, and reached the top ten on the iTunes mainstream charts in 16 countries. 4 on the Oricon Singles Chart and number 5 on Billboard Japan 's Hot 100. The television edit of the song was published on digital platforms on July 23, 2018, while the full single version was released on October 3, 2018. Written and produced by Yoshiki, it is the opening theme song of the first 12 episodes of the third season of the Attack on Titan anime series.
